Bron Jones is Derby born and bred and very proud.
It was this sense of pride that inspired her to start her business, Derby Bush Adventures, four years ago.
Since then, the business has grown, with many happy customers experiencing a taste of Derby’s unique nature and history. “I’m very proud of my town and I love to promote it and our community,” Bron said. “They have a bush experience like no other, especially when they can go out and catch a barramundi on country, experience the tidal movements of the huge tides coming in through the tidal systems.” “That’s one of the things they just love to see when the tide comes in.”
Derby Bush Adventures offers two primary experiences: barramundi fishing charters and bush tours. Both are land-based, offering visitors a trip like no other, guided by local knowledge. “The tours explore the tidal system of the Fitzroy River and other historical points such as Knobby’s Well, which was a staging post for the cattle muster in the early days between Meda and Derby, and there are some graves there,” she said. “I go out to Bungarun where the leprosarium is, I really just want people to have a good time and learn how much more there is to Derby than meets the eye.”
The tour is very popular with bird watchers, known as twitchers, who are amazed at the variety of native birdlife in the region. “The bird life is phenomenal around town, especially with the brolgas,” Bron said. “They’re a big feature of attraction for people.” Bron’s love for fishing, fitness, and meeting new people inspired her to start Derby Bush Adventures.
Over the years, she’s met remarkable people who’ve stayed connected through social media, forming lasting bonds. “I’ve met some phenomenal people through this business,” Bron said.
